Head Lice(The word lice is plural for louse. ) are ectoparasites that exist on human hair. These are considered to be an object of ridicule to the person who has them. Some people suffer from infestations of lice on their heads during some seasons of the year, while they may die out in other seasons. Lice can make the roots of the hair weaker and eventually lead to hair loss. In extreme cases, lice can also cause fevers in the person who has them. For this reason, it is necessary to get rid of head lice quickly and effectively.
The head lice symptoms, of course, are unmistakable – an intense itching on the scalp and the back of the neck. If you examine an infected person’s scalp, the nape of the neck or above the ears, you would find small white nits attached firmly to the hair shafts. This is a sure giveaway of lice infestation. The bad news is these nits cannot be dusted off like dandruff. Adult head lice can cause severe irritation through the action of its saliva. For severe cases please consult the physician.
There are three forms of lice, namely the nit, the nymph, and the adult louse: Nit: Nits are lice eggs. Nits are hard to see and are often confused with dandruff or hair spray droplets. Nits are found firmly attached to the hair shaft. They are oval and usually yellow to white. Nits take about a week to hatch. Nymph: The nit hatches into a baby louse called a nymph. It looks like an adult head louse, but is smaller. Nymphs mature into adults about seven days after hatching. To live, the nymph must feed on blood. Adult: The adult louse is about the size of a sesame seed, has six legs, and is tan to grayish-white in color. In people with dark hair, the adult louse looks darker. Females lay nits; they are usually larger than males. Adult lice can live up to 30 days on a person's head. To live, adult lice need to feed on blood. If the louse falls off a person, it dies within two days.
Head lice infestation is a problem that occurs due to lack of hygiene on the part of the person. The following things must be done to keep the head clean and to prevent an infestation of lice in it:- (i) Wash your hair everyday. You may shampoo it once in three days, but be sure to pass water through the hair daily. While washing the hair, massage at the roots of the hair, and not at the tips of the hair. That serves no purpose. (ii) After your bath, oil the hair. Again, the oil must be applied on the scalp more. (iii) Do not share combs, caps, hats, hairbrushes and any other kind of things used for the hair with anyone else. (iv) Always wash your hair after you return home from a long journey where you have been in contact with crowded places.

Medicated Remedies for Head Lice
For head lice use Listerine (original flavor): Another remedy for treating head lice is rubbing listerine mouth wash on your head. This will kill all the lice. Apply Listerine(must be of original flavor) after washing your head with shampoo. Keep it for 10-15 min and then wash it off without using shampoo.
1. Mayonnaise: Massage your head with mayonnaise and comb it after 2 hours. This will kill all the lice and their eggs. Apply a mixture of lemon and butter on your head, wait for 15 seconds and then rinse your head. Apply mayonnaise thoroughly to the scalp and cover the hair with a plastic bag. Leave it for one hour and heat it with a blow dryer for 5 minutes. Rinse the hair and apply regular hair gel. Use a fine-toothed comb to remove nits and lice
2. Tea tree oil and olive oil: Mix olive oil with tea tree oil and apply to the hair and rub into the scalp. Wait for half-an-hour or an hour before washing. Now, wash the hair to remove the oil and rinse the hair again with vinegar. This would loosen the ‘glue’ holding the nits to the hair shaft. Finally comb the hair to get rid of any remaining lice.
Be careful before trying 'alternative' treatments, like mayonaise, vaseline, olive oil or Tea tree oil. Although they are 'natural' treatments, they are untested, and products like mayonaise can be hard to get out of a child's hair.
3. An anti-lice oil can be mixed with coconut (or mustard) oil and 0.2 per cent lindane (BHC) or 0.1 per cent pyrethrum essence. This oil can be rubbed well into the scalp to kill lice. (Ingredients can be purchased from a chemical dealer).
4. Mix talcum powder with 0.2 per cent prethrum dust in it (or add 10 per cent DDT). Sprinkle this powder on the hair before going to bed and rub it vigorously so that it reaches the roots. Cover your mouth, nose and eyes to protect them from the powder.
5. Anti-louse lotion, either Gamma benzene hexachloride lotion or cream (Lorexane, Gammaexane) or Malathion (Prioderma) will kill the eggs which can be removed by a comb with very fine teeth. One treatment is enough but all the family who are infested should be treated and the hair examined regularly for a while. You may consult a doctor for the treatment.
6. To remove head lice and their nits. put lotion on the head thick (baby lotion) an the comb the hair out with a regular comb to get any knots out then comb out with fine tooth comb.
When treating head lice, 1.do not use extra amounts of the lice medication, 2.do not treat the infested person more than two times with the same medication (if it does not seem to work, see your health-care practitioner), and 3.do not mix head-lice medications. 4.Do not use theses medications on kids of below two years.
